If you are anything like me, you probably wonder whether the people telling you about sales on sites such as Haute Look, Gilt, Sigma, Living Social, Groupon, etc. (via Twitter, YouTube, blogs, and other social media) are actually participating in the sales or just trying to get you to do it. Well, I can tell you that I do make purchases from these sites. I may not buy from every sale I advertise (sometimes I won't find anything I want, or I might be on a shopping diet, or the things I wanted were sold out), but I figure there is no reason I shouldn't let you all know the sales are going on. I've decided to share some of my purchases with you so that you can see that I don't just go on and on about these sales, but I also partake in the bargain shopping myself. Who knows, maybe you'll see something you were interested in for when the next sale rolls around.
One of my most recent purchases was from Haute Look. They held a Jane Cosmetics sale, and everything was $5 or less. There aren't any retailers in my area that carry Jane, and I've read a lot of bloggers who like this bargain brand. I had to grab a few goodies when the sale rolled around. Here is a list of the items I purchased and how much I paid for them:
- Hydrating Tinted Moisturizer (Light Warm) - $4.75
- Blushing Cheeks blush (Orchid) - $2.75
- Blushstix (Shimmering Brown) - $3.50
- Full Coverage Tube Concealer (Light) - $4.50
The Blushstix, a cream blush in a tube (it twists out like a lipstick), is a gorgeous rosy brown. I love how this looks on the cheeks, giving you a dewey glow in a rose-tan tone. It's creamy and goes on smoothly. No need to press too hard when applying, because this glides right on -- a heavy had can easily result in applying too much product. I like applying this with a foundation brush, which helps me control the amount of product used while achieving an airbrushed finish, as it blends out easily. The tube also makes it portable. You could easily toss it in your purse and reapply as needed (something you could do easily using your fingertips when you are on the go). However, it's a pretty decent size, so if you are carrying a small purse, it won't be all that convenient to tote around.
As you probably know from my post about Benefit's Boi-ing concealer, I've been on a concealer quest. I made this purchase before I found Boi-ing, but since HauteLook purchases take a little while to ship (something I'm OK with given the heavy discounts the sales offer), I didn't receive it until after I'd made my concealer Holy Grail discovery. Regardless, I'm happy to report that Jane's No Show full-coverage liquid concealer is actually really nice. Will it replace Boi-ing? Not likely. But it would replace other concealers I've purchased. I have to say, in my experience using it, it has not settled into the creases in the under eye area and it offers very good coverage. I do have to make it known, however, that I do not have dark under eye circles. I get some darkness in the inner corner, but I don't find it overly challenging to conceal (unless the concealer I'm using it too watery). I felt this concealer provided good coverage, held strong, stayed in place, and stayed true to it's name as a no show concealer. I tried to swatch it on my hand, but, it pretty much blended in (like it should), so it's hard to show you what it looks like. Instead, I took a picture of the drop of product I put on my hand before blending it into my skin.
The last product I purchased is probably my least favorite of the bunch, the Hydrating Tinted Moisturizer. In theory, I like it a lot. It's organic, which makes me feel all warm and fuzzy; has green and white tea extracts, which are supposed to be good for your skin; and protects with SPF 30. Maybe I haven't road tested it enough (I've worn it about four times), but I'm just not wowed. It's not bad, but I just feel like I don't really have anything to say about it. It's oil free, but the first two times I wore it, my skin felt oily. Interestingly, this didn't happen the other two times I used it. The coverage is light, but that is expected with a tinted moisturizer. I can't say that when I wear it, I feel like my skin looks fabulous like I have with other tinted moisturizers, which just leaves me feeling a bit ho-hum about it. I don't love it. I don't loathe it. I'm almost indifferent towards it. Perhaps the verdict is still out. I can't seem to form a concrete opinion about it. Maybe after a few more tries I can make a better decision. Have any of you used this product? What has your experience been with it?
Have you used any of the other products I purchased? Did you have the same experience? I have to say again, I really liked my blushes, and I'm definitely happy with the concealer. So, three out of four successful product purchases is a good thing in my eyes.
