Do you guys remember when I posted this haul? No? Maybe? It was a little while ago, but I'm finally getting my life together and reviewing the Rimmel Wonder'Lash mascara with Argan Oil that I purchased that day. Just to give you the quick recap: I purchased it at Target for $7.99 in the shade Extreme Black.
I think after more than a month of usage, I've gotten a pretty good grip on how I feel about its performance.
Have you been passing this mascara by in the makeup aisle, wondering wether it was worth the purchase? Well, now you can find out. But first, let's take a look at this new mascara and what it claims to do for your lashes.
As you can see from the packaging, the mascara's claim to fame is that it creates clump-free volume and definition and that the argan oil will keep your lashes moisturized so they can remain soft and flexible. Here are just a few highlights from the back of the packaging:
- Formula with Argan Oil smooths lashes with zero clumps and provides feather-light volume. Lashes feel conditioned, soft and flexible.
- The smooth operator brush with ultra-soft bristles hugs lashes defining them from root to tip
- All lashes are revealed with full, perfectly smooth, clump-free volume
Smooth Operator Brush
Alright, so the first thing I would like to address is the brush. It's your typical rubber wand with rubber bristles. The wand size is about average, nothing major to report there. But the bristles are long and abundant. See for yourself.
I find it interesting that Rimmel would describe the bristles as soft. Maybe soft is a relative term in their eyes. I don't know. But in my opinion, they are definitely not soft. They are rubber and I would not want to poke myself in the eye with them... again. Ouch.
What Rimmel is absolutely right about is that the bristles on the Smooth Operator brush indeed grip your lashes and separate the life out of them. You will definitely experience lash definition and you may even notice that you have more lashes than you originally thought you did.
The Formula
For the first week or so that I used the mascara, I was not digging it at all. The formula was very wet and it was difficult to build up coats. It seemed like every time I'd ry to add a second or third coat, the bristles would just wipe away the coat that was already there. The result was that I would get definition but no volume, which was kind of frustrating
After about a week of use, the formula started to thicken/dry a bit, which made it a lot easier to work with. Once I could actually build up the mascara, I got better results in the volume department.
That being said, this mascara is more about definition than volume. The Extreme Black shade is very dark and that combined with the lash separation results in some pretty nicely defined lashes. Plus, the Argan Oil helped keep my lashes soft and flexible.
As for building volume, it's not bad. It's just not as good as my tried-and-true L'Oreal Voluminous (or Million Lashes or even Telescopic). While it does help thicken, I'm left wanting more. Call me greedy, I can't help it.

Best Use
I personally like to use this mascara when I'm wearing minimal, natural makeup. I use one or two coats to help separate and define my lashes, while keeping them soft and looking somewhat natural. When I'm wearing a more intense look, and want a lot of volume, I use Rimmel's Wonder'Lash as a base coat to condition my lashes and separate them, then I add my favorite volumizing mascara on top. If I'm feeling extra froggy, I'll finish off with a final coat of Wonder'Lash for a little extra lash separation.
The result is that I get the thick volume I like, while taking advantage of the separating powers of the Smooth Operator brush and the conditioning properties of the Wonder'Lash formula.
Overall thoughts
I'm really impressed with how well Wonder'Lash and the Smooth Operator brush separate, define, and condition my lashes. But I'm left feeling "meh" about the volume. All in all, it's a good mascara and I would recommend it to anyone who suffers from lash breakage or has a hard time with clumping.
